How many supercomputers does India have
Atos operates the fastest supercomputer in Europe in Jülich
With 44.1 petaflops, JUWELS is the fastest supercomputer system in Europe - and at the same time the most energy-efficient in the TOP100
Paris, November 17, 2020 - Atos, one of the world's leading providers of digital transformation, is currently operating with JUWELS, the high-performance computer at Forschungszentrum Jülich fastest supercomputer system in Europe. It is based on the innovative BullSequana XH2000 platform from Atos and, with a sustained peak performance of 44.1 HPL petaflops, ranks 7th in the TOP500 and 5th in the HPCG ranking list. JUWELS is also that most energy-efficient supercomputer system in the TOP100 and is in third place on the Green500.
Highest energy efficiency
Thanks to the patented DLC (Direct Liquid Cooling) solution from Atos, which minimizes energy consumption by using hot water at a temperature of up to 40 ° C, JUWELS is now the world's most energy-efficient supercomputer in its class. In the TOP100 list, it takes first place in terms of energy efficiency. The system also ranks alongside 30 other Atos supercomputers on the current Green500 list. These placements underscore Atos' commitment to helping its customers achieve their decarbonization goals.
Faster and smarter - equipped for exascale
Atos, together with Jülich and the German HPC software specialist ParTec, has strengthened the existing JUWELS supercomputer system with a highly scalable booster module. This significantly shifts the application limits of HPC simulations: science and industry can use JUWELS to cope with much more demanding computing tasks and data analyzes than was previously possible in Europe. The module also makes JUWELS the strongest European AI platform.
"We are convinced that JUWELS is a milestone on the way to the European exascale calculator, which is due to come onto the market in 2023", says Prof. Thomas Lippert, head of the Jülich Supercomputing Center. “With our sophisticated modular JUWELS system, our scientists can now take a big step forward in many areas. At the same time, researchers and engineers from industry are one step ahead of the competition. "
“This year, at the international HPC conference SC'20, we will show how Atos enables faster, smarter and more environmentally friendly simulations. The JUWELS supercomputer system is a prime example of all three aspects, ”says Agnès Boudot, Senior Vice President, Head of HPC & Quantum at Atos. "It was great to work with Jülich and its partners in order to achieve this increase in efficiency and performance and thus decisively advance research and innovation in Europe."
“Our A100 Tensor Core GPUs in this booster module are based on our NVIDIA Ampere architecture. This groundbreaking technical achievement provides an enormous increase in performance for AI training and inference compared to the previous generation. The data center-scale platform features Accelerated Computing and Mellanox HDR InfiniBand Networking. This enables the researchers in Jülich to advance the development and use of accelerated data analysis, HPC and AI in order to meet the challenges of the exascale era for AI, ”says Ian Buck, General Manager and Vice President of Accelerated Computing at Nvidia.
In research, JUWELS is used in areas such as climate, environment, sustainable energy management, materials research or brain research. The booster module is based on the BullSequana X2415 Blade from Atos, which is equipped with NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs, an NVIDIA Mellanox HDR 200Gb / s InfiniBand high-performance network and CPUs from AMD. Atos now has 31 supercomputers in the TOP500, with a combined peak performance of 251 petaflops - a 79 percent increase in petaflops compared to the TOP500 list in June.
The supercomputer system at JUWELS consists of
- 38 BullSequana XH2000 racks from Atos
- 3700 Nvidia A100-40 GPUs
- AMD Zen-2 Rom CPUs
- HDR 200Gb / s InfiniBand
- ParTec software (ParaStation Modulo)
