How can one receive the Holy Spirit?

7. Conditions for receiving the Holy Spirit

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit moved all who had heard the call of the gospel to cry, “Brothers, what should we do?” (Acts 2:37).

“Peter answers them: 'Turn away from your sins and turn to God. BE ALL BAPTIZED in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. THEN YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. This promise of God applies to you and your children and also to those who are far from God - all who are called by the Lord our God ”- Acts 2:38

The apostle Peter emphasized the need for repentance - turning away from a life of sin and turning to Christ - as a prerequisite for receiving the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit already works in people to lead them to this point: It makes us aware of God's goodness and arouses in us the need to turn away from evil (Romans 2: 4). He is also involved in the process of conversion (Acts 3:19).

Peter was particularly concerned with the following point: Before we can ourselves be filled with the Spirit, we must first repent, repent, and entrust our lives entirely to Christ. The outward sign of this delivery is baptism.

Jesus underlined the same truth with a slightly different emphasis. He emphasized willingness to follow and obey him as a condition for receiving the gift of the Spirit:

“IF YOU LOVE ME, YOU WILL KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS. And I will ask the Father and he will give you another counselor who will never leave you. It is THE HOLY SPIRIT; WHO guides in all truth ”- John 14.15-17

A person who claims the gift of the Holy Spirit for himself, but at the same time continues his sinful life, is only deceiving himself. For there is also an "evil spirit" who imitates the manifestations of the Spirit of God, and in this way some to that The conclusion is that this “gift of God” excuses their immoral behavior.
