Eisenmann is disempowered: Greens push through the mask requirement in elementary schools
STUTTGART. The state of Baden-Württemberg is also tightening the reins in schools because of the spread of the corona mutant. The Ministry of Education had opposed a mask requirement for elementary school students. But the pressure became too great - and the loser Eisenmann apparently has nothing more to say. There are also signs of a turnaround in terms of alternating lessons for the 5th and 6th grades, which the failed top CDU candidate had vigorously opposed.
The state of Baden-Württemberg is introducing compulsory masks in primary schools due to the increasing number of corona infections. The German press agency learned this on Thursday in Stuttgart from government circles. The primary school students, who have been back in full face-to-face classes this week, should wear a mouth and nose cover in the school building. At the secondary schools in the 5th and 6th grades and in the final grades there is already a mask requirement. So far, only everyday masks are officially prescribed, in practice almost only medical mouth and nose covers are worn.
The school directors' association spoke of a “certificate of poverty” for the Ministry of Education, because it totally refused to accept this topic
Most recently, the school directors' association, the city council and also the Greens in the state parliament urged the Ministry of Education, led by Susanne Eisenmann (CDU), to make the mask mandatory in primary schools as well. It was argued that children in particular would also be infected with the mutated viruses that are now very common. "We now urgently need to readjust," said Greens parliamentary group leader Andreas Schwarz on Wednesday in Stuttgart. "We need to wear a mask in primary schools." This is essential for the health protection of teachers and children.
The school directors' association spoke of a “certificate of poverty” for the Ministry of Education, because it totally refused to accept this topic. The blue surgical masks would also have to be compulsory for primary school students, demanded association head Werner Weber. In secondary schools from grade five and in vocational schools there is already an obligation to wear a mouth and nose cover outside of class. On Monday, the primary schools switched from alternating classes to regular operations.
The attitude of the department no longer corresponds to the medical development, said Weber, principal of a Heidenheim community school. In contrast to the studies carried out at the beginning, it turns out that children in particular would also be infected with mutated viruses. In his school, the primary school students already wore 100 percent masks - “voluntarily and without damage”. But that is not the case everywhere. There are also cases in which parents see their children's rights curtailed by masks and influence them accordingly. The children then got into an unnecessary conflict.
The City Council also advocated an expanded obligation. "There is more and more discussion and criticism of not doing this in the association, because in principle all pupils can be present again at primary schools and there is no distance requirement between pupils," said Head of Department Norbert Brugger. It should be clarified which masks are to be worn and whether the obligation also applies in class. The ministry did not comment on this.
Eisenmann had rejected the Greens' request to allow alternating lessons in grades 5 and 6
As the dpa also learned, under pressure from the Greens in the 5th and 6th grades, a change from face-to-face and distance learning should be possible again. The fifth and sixth graders returned to their schools last Monday after months of home schooling. Just over a week ago, there had been a violent dispute in the green-black coalition over the question of whether the rules of distance had to be adhered to in the classes. Eisenmann had rejected the Greens' request to allow alternate classes if the schools cannot guarantee the distance. On Sunday she lost the election as the CDU top candidate. She has announced that she will be leaving politics. News4teachers / with material from the dpa
