Fortnite: Battle Royale receives age rating

“At what age is the game Fortnite actually released? "This question is by no means trivial and has caused heated discussions in many families. The popular shooter can be played in different modes, for which different age rating regulations applied in the past: once for media such as CD, DVD and Blu-ray Disc, and once for telemedia such as download games and apps. But now the action game has received a legal age rating from the USK for both modes: Suitable for ages 12 +.

The 2 game modes

In Germany, only games that are published on a carrier medium (CD, DVD, Blu-ray Disc) are legally labeled by the entertainment software self-regulation. In 2017 appeared with Save the world A chargeable basic game in which the end of the game in a comic-like, fictional world as a team build a protective fort (fortress) and have to use gun violence to defend themselves against approaching zombies. Since the game appeared on a data carrier, it was submitted to the USK for examination and received the age rating Suitable for ages 12 +.

The mode Battle Royaleis much more popular with children and adolescents and is therefore usually meant when by Fortnite the speech is. The players end up on an island with the aim of finding the last surviving character or team and thus achieving an “epic victory”. You can find a detailed pedagogical assessment here. This mode was offered for free download on the Internet (Telemedium), which is why the USK did not have to label it. Instead, this was given a non-legally binding "USK16" identifier as part of the IARC procedure, which is generated on the basis of a self-assessment by the provider.

Different effect?

In professional circles it was discussed to what extent the Battle Royale-Mode-changed game setting "everyone against everyone" influences the effect on the development of children and adolescents. Although the events in both modes are characterized by confrontations with armed violence, there is a clear difference: at Save the world this is only aimed at computer-controlled zombies, im Battle Royale-Mode (mainly) on other game ends. Likewise, the goal of defeating everyone else is hardly framed by a background story or moral attributions. There is an ongoing background story (see here or here), but this does not explicitly legitimize the violence of arms for the players - as in the Save the worldMode is roughly the case. Thus, players act in the moral gray area, which requires a certain ability to reflect. However, the fact that the game plot is embedded in a fictional scenario in a colorful comic look is a relief. The playing figures do not die and there are no visible injuries. These are only excerpts from the controversial debate.

Further criteria for contemporary media education

The USK checks games on the basis of the Youth Protection Act. Aspects such as costs, binding factors, data protection and interaction between the players are not included here, but should be taken into account by parents in media education. Because although the Battle RoyaleMode is free, in-game purchases may still incur costs. These are mostly visual embellishments (skins) that do not have any influence on the success of the game, but can be seen as status symbols within the community or the peer group. Clear agreements between players and legal guardians in this regard - such as a fixed budget - can prevent conflicts and strengthen young people in their personal responsibility.
In addition, gamers can get in touch with strangers via an in-game voice chat. Insults or otherwise inappropriate behavior are not uncommon. Parents should therefore educate their children about contact risks and how to deal with strangers in play settings.

The legal age rating “from 12 years” for the entire product Fortnite finally eliminates the prevailing confusion and provides both parents and adolescents with a valuable guide to media rules. However, legal guardians should always check on a case-by-case basis whether the game is suitable for their child, as a legal age rating should not be understood as a recommendation. Children and young people develop quite differently, which is why parents should take their responsibility seriously, get an idea of what is happening in the game, adopt an attitude and represent it authentically. Questions like: “How do I feel about the violent setting?” Or “Is there a constant desire to want to play?” Should be reflected on by parents and their children together. It should also be noted that a round Fortnite Incidentally, this should only be allowed if there is enough time, as a successful lap can take up to 40 minutes and can neither be paused nor saved. It should also be on the subject Fortnite If there is always an argument, meaningful conversations and clear rules help, whereby parents can support their children in dealing with experiences in digital worlds in a responsible, reflective and self-confident manner.

Politicians are also in demand: so that such confusion no longer arises in the near future with regard to the age rating of different modes with different distribution channels, the amendment to the protection of minors in the media announced for this legislative period and the harmonization of carrier and telemedia should be implemented as soon as possible so that it fits into today's life - and the media reality of adolescents fits.
