Fluorescent lamps are low-pressure discharge lamps. The chemical composition of the luminescent material with three or five particularly distinctive spectral ranges (in blue, green and red) determine, among other things, the light color and the color rendering. Fluorescent lamps offer:

However, the level of the luminous flux depends on the ambient temperature. Depending on the lamp type, the temperature for the maximum luminous flux z. B. specified with 5 ° C, 25 ° C or 35 ° C. If there is a significant deviation from these values, the luminous flux is significantly reduced (e.g. below 20% at -20 ° C).
Operation with electronic ballasts (EVG) - a must for lamps with a diameter of 16 mm - improves energy efficiency and light quality. The use of warm start ECGs also increases the service life of these lamps. The lamps start quickly, noiselessly and flicker-free. They give constant, calm light without electrode flicker or stroboscopic effects; defective lamps are switched off automatically. All fluorescent lamps can be dimmed with a suitable electronic ballast and - another energy saving - can be regulated depending on the daylight. If fluorescent lamps are used outdoors, you should pay attention to special variants that offer approximately the same luminous flux in the temperature range of 5 ° to 70 ° Celsius.
T5 fluorescent lamps with a tube diameter of 16 mm from the "high luminous efficacy" series are extremely economical. The "high luminous flux" series, on the other hand, is ideally suited for areas of application in rooms with great heights. Important: T8 fluorescent lamps with a tube diameter of 26 mm only achieve their technical data and service life when operated with electronic ballasts. T5 fluorescent lamps must be operated with electronic ballasts.
T5 fluorescent lamps often replace Ø 26 mm lamps because their luminous efficacy is even higher and their service life is longer. The range of tubular fluorescent lamps is supplemented by "minis" with a diameter of 7 mm - mainly used in furniture and picture lights - as well as Ø 38 mm lamps. These are mostly special lamps for workplaces with a risk of explosion or for low-temperature areas (outdoor lighting, freezer stores ).
