tourism: Bars and clubs in Barcelona have to close again

Due to the increasing number of infections, especially in Barcelona, the Catalan authorities have ordered new restrictions on public life. The regional government in the popular tourist metropolis announced the closure of all discos, clubs and other nightlife spots in the entire region in the northeast of the country, like the newspaper El País reported.

France had previously advised against traveling to Catalonia, and Norway had ordered a ten-day quarantine for returnees from Spain. Across Spain, according to the Ministry of Health, more than 900 new infections were registered within 24 hours. Almost half of the cases were reported from Catalonia and the neighboring region of Aragón.

All cultural events are also prohibited in Barcelona from Monday. For a week now, the residents of the city and the southern suburb of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a total of 2.7 million people, have only been supposed to leave their homes for urgent reasons such as shopping or errands. According to official information, there are currently around 280 local coronavirus outbreaks across Spain.

With more than 270,000 detected infections and over 28,400 deaths, Spain is one of the countries worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic in Europe. While the numbers fell sharply thanks to drastic measures, they have been slowly rising again since the end of the emergency on June 21.
