Salary as a computer scientist

Training remuneration is only available for in-company training or a dual degree in computer science. During your studies, you are either dependent on BAFöG, a scholarship or your own financial reserves.

The earnings during the training in computer science depend on the respective training company and in which industry and region it is located. On average, a trainee earns between 850 and 1,045 euros (gross) per month in the first year. In the second year of training, the salary increases to between 950 and 1,095 euros (gross), while in the third year the trainee earns an average of between 1,000 and 1,250 euros (gross) per month.

After successfully completing your studies, an entry-level salary of between EUR 3,000 and EUR 3,500 (gross) is usual, depending on the degree, subject area, industry and company. With advancing age and increasing professional experience, the salary increases accordingly and can reach an average maximum amount of 7,000 to 10,000 euros (gross) per month.

This depends, among other things, on the size of the employer and the position the computer scientist holds there. For amounts from and over 10,000 euros (gross) per month, a position in the management level is often filled or a position that is associated with a high level of responsibility.

Training and studies as a computer scientist

The training to become a computer scientist usually takes place on the dual path and is referred to as "dual studies". This means that the trainee is primarily a student at a technical college or university, but must gain skills in a training company in the practical phases. Distance learning in IT courses is also possible.

The computer science course usually lasts between 6 and 8 semesters. Expressed in years, this is between 3 and 4 years. Extensions are possible, shortening rather unusual, unless knowledge has already been acquired that can be credited to the course.

The course itself offers different subjects in which the trainee can specialize. These are applied informatics, business informatics, media informatics, business technology and the focus on system administration or programming of certain (language) software.

The teaching content includes, among other things, mathematical-theoretical and technical basics. Knowledge of application development and software engineering with various operating systems, databases and networks is also imparted to the student.

In addition, the various programming languages ​​and techniques such as Java or C ++ are on the curriculum. Since IT security is becoming more and more important, it is not neglected in this course either.

Due to the different subject areas and the differences between the individual universities, the detailed curriculum varies. In addition, the student himself has a certain amount of freedom as to which subjects he / she would like to take in addition to the compulsory modules specified by the respective university.

The dual study program to become a computer scientist offers an attractive special feature. The practical phase in a training company makes it possible to complete a full training course. This means that two degrees can be obtained with this degree program.

On the one hand it is the bachelor's degree (e.g. the "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)") and on the other hand it is the title of "IT specialist". Since not all training companies offer the opportunity to complete in-company training, inquiries should be made in advance if the student attaches importance to dual qualifications.

With an IT degree or training as a computer scientist, the doors to the job market are wide open to you. There are top salaries that other professions can only dream of, and graduates are often taken under contract some time before they graduate.

Requirements and characteristics for computer science training

In order to be able to start a dual computer science course, proof of the completion of the Abitur or specialist diploma must be provided. As a rule, the training companies expect initial knowledge and experience in the IT sector as well as good grades in mathematics, German and English in order to be able to understand and apply the complex programming languages.

The ability to work in a team, a sense of responsibility and careful work are additional requirements that the applicant should meet. The personal prerequisites should also include the ability to think analytically and logically and an understanding of complex structures.

An advantage - in order to make learning easier for students - is initial knowledge of the individual programming languages. However, these are not required.

Application as a computer scientist

The application is usually made directly to the (technical) university. It is particularly important to adhere to the application deadline, as there are usually more applicants than places and the universities also need a certain lead time to process.

As with a company, a cover letter with a tabular curriculum vitae, all necessary certificates and qualifications - often in certified form - and all relevant additional certificates acquired must be submitted.

At some universities it is necessary to go through an application process. Even if this is not the rule, the applicant should still prepare well for it. First and foremost, it is about the motivation, motivation, wishes and goals that the applicant has and why he / she would like to take part in this university and this course of study. Specific prior technical knowledge is usually not requested.

As a rule, the applicant has to look for a place in a training company himself. A motivating application letter with a complete résumé, proof of study and all relevant previous certificates and degrees are also required here.
