BestBuy dies because of Amazon

US retail chain Best Buy stops CD sales: streaming is standard

Best Buy, one of the largest retailers in the US, will no longer sell CDs in its stores as of July. The dealer informed suppliers of this in a letter. Best Buy was only able to earn around 40 million US dollars per year with the sound carriers. Interestingly, the sales of vinyl LPs at Best Buy are supposed to continue. Despite the MP3s, the CD had not yet been completely dead. In the medium term, however, this is likely to face an even worse fate than the vinyl record, which has now become a collector's item. The increasingly popular streaming services seem to have given the CD the final fatal blow. Spotify, Google Play Music and Amazon Prime Music are enjoying increasing popularity.

Only Microsoft seems to have overslept another trend with the recently discontinued Groove Music Pass. As the Redmond company announced in October 2017, Microsoft will cooperate with Spotify in the future. The Groove Music app will live on as a mundane player with Microsoft referencing Spotify. Or maybe Microsoft is planning to take over Spotify.

Apple pushes Spotify on the wall

The streaming pioneer from Sweden certainly played a part in the CD's decline, but has been struggling with major losses for years. Work is currently feverishly on an IPO that will bring new money into the coffers. Spotify is still the market leader. In the US, Apple Music is in the process of catching up with the streaming service.

Streaming has now also become the standard in Germany, and the smartphone boom in recent years has played a part in this. Best Buys counterpart in Germany, the Mediamarkt, still sells CDs and advertises online with "a huge selection of music and audio books". In Germany, too, it should not be long before the CD disappears from the shelves of Mediamarkt and Co. and degenerates into a niche product.
