You can rotate video footage in iMovie

Rotate videos or photos

  • In the project overview, click a photo or video clip in your project and press the "C" key or click the "Crop" button.

For video clips, trimming (or rotating) is applied to the entire clip, even if you only select part of the clip.

  • At the top of the Viewer, click the spin arrow you want.

Each click of the mouse rotates the image 90 degrees. After changing the orientation, the image may no longer fit the aspect ratio of the project. In this case, black bars may appear at the top and bottom of the picture (letterbox) or on the left and right (pillarbox).

  • In the upper left corner of the Viewer, click Crop to crop and fit the image.

Adjust the green cropping box by dragging the corners or borders to show the part of the image you want. Click Allow Black if you are working with a photo and you want to keep black borders in the image when you crop it.

Instead, click Adjust to see the entire image. Black bars may appear on the sides or at the top and bottom of the image.

  • Click the play button in the upper right corner of the Viewer to preview the image.

  • When the image is what you expected, click Done.
