What is the motivation to want to start a business?

Around ten years ago, I too was faced with the decision whether I wanted to continue working in a marketing consultancy that did not make me happy, or pursue my own dream of self-employment.

I created huge pro-and-contralists and made the decision difficult for myself. For me, it was ultimately the freedom I had gained that made the difference.

Every day I spend time with founders who come from a wide variety of reasons start your own company want. I'm always surprised at the motivations I get to hear. Today I brought you the best reasons.

How do I become an entrepreneur now?

First of all, you need one thing above all: courage. Do you have the courage to achieve something and take fate into your own hands? If you are one of those people who have an idea and want change and variety - then you should read on.

Because then you are ready for your own business start-up, your own thing, for independence.

The step into self-employment is a pretty big one and certainly also involves many risks. In addition, there are many people who will interfere with you and think they know better - that's mostly how it is.

In this article, however, I want to focus primarily on the advantages of being self-employed. After all, pessimism isn't always appropriate and there will always be complainers. But if you have a dream that you want to realize, then you should hold on to it - no matter what Aunt Erna tells you at the next family celebration.

Even if the kiosk operator next door is not at all enthusiastic about your idea. - keep going! Which of course doesn't mean that you shouldn't accept any advice or criticism in principle - maybe you should just assess beforehand how useful it is and who it comes from.

After all, you only live once - which brings us to a good reason why you should definitely dare to start your own business. For this, of course, the requirements described above should be met. I've just put together a few reasons that I hope will motivate you.

1) As a founder, you only pursue your own goals.

Own goals? I don't have them at the moment?

Of course you do, but think about their implications and whether they really make you happy.

You have one more assignment for your boss to do next week. At some point you wanted to complete a degree. A promotion wouldn't be bad either. Or finally a permanent position? Sure, these are goals, but are they really yours?

I can speak from experience - nothing is more enriching than being able to set your own goals and finally do what you always wanted to do.

2) Your day is what it should be - yours.

Beep, beep, beep: the alarm clock goes off.

If you are in a bad mood, you press the snooze button on your alarm clock, totally sleepless.

It's 7:00 a.m. You have to be at work in an hour and a half - with a boss who once again assigns you some boring tasks that you should have completed as quickly as possible. Fun is certainly something different.

At 5 p.m. sharp you go home. Why do you always drop the pen on the second? I thought you would enjoy the job?

After work, you can quickly go to the supermarket before you stand by the stove for another half an hour, clean the apartment and fall into bed exhausted.

And? How much time did you have for yourself? If you experience this everyday life too often and are only looking forward to the weekends, then maybe you should change something.

How about being your own master? To be able to determine what to do when and how? Sure, you should get up early too. And there will also be boring tasks. But above all you do it for yourself and you can organize it yourself. More on this in point 3.

3) You can even start a business as a sleepyhead - with a gold bed

I know the problem all too well - almost no feeling is like being able to sleep in in the morning.

Of course you have a lot to do as a founder and also in the future as an entrepreneur - but now between us: whether you do the paperwork at seven in the morning or at one at noon does not matter - provided, of course, you do it too.

Self-employment brings along what it promises - you yourself are responsible for yourself, your idea and later for your company. You should definitely use the time flexibility for yourself and structure everyday life according to your preferences - Nevertheless, work usually comes before pleasure.

But work has one big advantage: you only work for yourself. This means that at some point you will reap the successes that you have sown all by yourself.

You are not working for the profit of the shareholders, your boss or business partner, but only for your own pocket. Does that sound tempting?

4) You never stop learning - especially not as a founder

During the founding phase you will not be exposed to a situation in which you will not get anywhere on your own or you think that you cannot solve it with your existing skills.

The tip here is always: Don't bury your head in the sand too quickly. Being thrown into the cold water can definitely do you good. After all, you only grow with the challenges and can thus develop your own skills or finally prove what you are capable of.

If you are forced or, in certain situations, on your own, you usually develop undiscovered skills - precisely because you have to!

I know this from my own everyday consulting work: how often have founders come to my office who told me about a really (positively) crazy idea while I stared at my notepad, perplexed?

Not because it didn't interest me, but because I couldn't do anything with the subject. And that's exactly the moment when the wheat is separated from the chaff - or the founder from the employee: even if you think at the beginning that you could never get into the new topic, in the end you always manage to somehow. And if you want to plan better, then create a business plan.

5) Finally make your own decisions

Every day you sit at your desk and imagine what you would do differently in your own company than your boss?

You can't understand most of the decisions at all? Well then, just do it yourself and show what you're made of!

As a founder and entrepreneur, you are solely responsible for your idea and the later structure or process of your company. This involves a number of decisions in advance that will later have a major impact on the company.

Here it is important that you clearly position yourself and your company with the decisions.

Rumbling around does not help much - you have to make clear and precise decisions. Strictly speaking, half-baked stuff won't do you any good. But believe me - if you just dare to do it, it can work wonders and it also affects your personality. In this way, you will also be more decisive in your private life and assert your opinion - an extremely good feeling.

I hope that you now have sufficient motivation to get one step closer to your founding.

You should be aware of one thing: there will always be criticism and opponents. But they are not necessarily always bad for you (at least not for your success). Because critics are a good way to approach the matter critically and to recognize possible deficiencies that would otherwise have been overlooked.

In addition, critics increase motivation and self-esteem when treated correctly. Who wouldn't want to “really show it to their opponents!”?

Insecurities are also normal and by no means bad. Anyone who dares to take such a big step is taking a risk. This is our natural protective instinct and helps us to be careful with issues.

You don't have to handle your start-up with kid gloves, but knocking it through the wall like John Rambo would certainly not be beneficial either. Finding the golden mean is therefore important!

What are the most important points when starting a business?

One of the most important points when you have one establish company you want to ask yourself the question:

"Do I even want to become an entrepreneur?"

Because, honestly, just because a lot of others are going into business for themselves and just because a lot of others are setting up their own business and building something, that doesn't necessarily mean that this is the right thing for you.

As an entrepreneur, you have to deal with an awful lot of things. You have to deal with when customers may not pay a bill, you have to deal with when things don't work out or don't work. You have to deal with it when success doesn't come as quickly as you would like.

Therefore, the very first question you should ask yourself is how much you really want it. So again:

"Do I even want to become an entrepreneur?"

What does that mean or how can you even find out? You can now take a founder or entrepreneur test on the Internet. But does that lead to the goal?

What I find important and helpful: talk to other successful entrepreneurs. Talk to other successful founders and ask them how they started and what their path looked like, including potential difficulties.

And then ask yourself whether these are things you would get along with. Coping with difficulties, not buying a fat Rolex.

If you answer “yes” to this question, then you have really come one step closer to the whole story.

What I also find very helpful is that you ask yourself how long your motivation will last.

"How motivated am I really?"

Did you think about the whole thing last Friday or is there something that burned inside you all along?

The next important topic is of course your idea.

To put it very simply: What are you planning to do and how can you create a product from this idea? How can you create something that people buy or want to have, that satisfies a need?

Finding an idea usually doesn't happen overnight, but you have to ask yourself what your idea looks like in concrete terms and which components belong to it. What might make your idea unique? What is the difference between your idea and other ideas?

And, a very simple question:

"Does anyone in the whole world need your idea at all?"

The whole thing only makes sense if the idea makes sense. Just because you think it's a good idea doesn't mean everyone else thinks it's a good idea.

If you are vegan, but only 1 percent of the population are vegan, your idea will appeal to a very sharp target group. That can be super good, but it can also be exactly the wrong decision.

Try to test this idea a little, talk to other people about how they think about this idea, how they would optimize and improve this idea, so that you really find an idea that will make the difference afterwards.

The next very important point is the following: When you have analyzed yourself as a founder and as an entrepreneur, when you have found your own idea, then you should of course deal intensively with what your own market looks like.

"What's your market anyway?"

How big is the market volume and how much market potential is there?

Is the market restricted geographically or in terms of time? Are your products bought in winter or in summer? Will your product be bought in Germany or the USA?

But not only to know the market as such as a whole, but also to understand the participants in the market.

By that I mean, for example, benchmarking and evaluating competitors according to the factors that are most relevant to you.

How does the competition advertise? How is the competition positioned? What prices does the competition call? All of these things play a major role in market analysis, but knowing the target group is also essential.

"Who should buy your products?"

Really playing detective and screening potential customers. You can only be successful in this market if you really know your own market.

Of course, especially at the beginning as an entrepreneur, you have to organize a lot, for example, you have to find out what the right insurance policies are for you. Go to an independent insurance broker here and talk to them exactly about what you are up to and get advice and nothing to talk about. Organization also includes finding the right legal form.

"In which legal form do you want to set up?"

Does it make more sense for you to found a sole proprietorship or to found a GmbH directly? Taxes also play a major role.

Find a tax advisor or accountant who knows their business. Of course, things like finding the right name for the company also belong in the topic of organization. Are you even allowed to use your desired name?

Actually almost the most important point is the marketing, the marketing, the propulsion, because you can be a born founder, you can have a great idea and a big market and be super organized, but if you don't know how to sell your products then you won't be successful.

One of the main reasons founders and entrepreneurs fail is because they don't understand how to sell their own products.

"How do you sell your products?"

Many entrepreneurs see that others sell their products one way or another and just do the same because they have no idea, to put it quite hard. No idea about marketing and sales

It is extremely important for you as an entrepreneur to really understand exactly how you do marketing, which channels are the right ones and which marketing strategy you want to use. How do you position yourself and what budget do you need?
