Can Kundalini be awakened more than once?

Kundalini Yoga: Beneficial or Dangerous?

Sadhguru talks about what Kundalini is and illuminates the process of Kundalini Yoga. He explains why this powerful spiritual process should be approached with the utmost reverence and responsibility.

Sadhguru: In yogic culture, the serpent is a symbol of Kundalini - the energy within you that has not yet manifested. Kundalini is such that as long as it is still you do not even know that it exists. Only when it moves do you notice that there is so much energy in you. Until it moves, it is almost non-existent. That is why Kundalini is symbolized as a serpent, because a coiled serpent is very difficult to see unless it is moving. Likewise, you don't notice this coiled energy until it's moving. When your Kundalini has been awakened, wonderful things happen to you that you never thought possible. A whole new level of energy begins to discharge, and your body and everything else behaves in a completely different way.

Kundalini and perception

An increased state of energy also means a state of increased awareness. The whole yogic system is aimed solely at expanding your perception. A spiritual process basically only means this: to expand your perception because you only know what you perceive. That is why Shiva and a serpent are used as symbols. It indicates that his energy has peaked. His energy has reached the top of his head and that is why his third eye has opened.

Kundalini and the third eye

The third eye does not mean that someone's forehead has opened and something has come out. It simply means that another dimension of perception has opened up. Both eyes can only see what is physical. If I cover them with my hand, they cannot see through. That's how severely restricted they are. When the third eye has opened, it means that another dimension of perception has opened, which is directed inward and which looks at life in a completely different way, and that all that there is to be perceived is being perceived .

Kundalini Yoga: Preparation First!

Nowadays, many books and yoga studios talk about Kundalini Yoga and its benefits, although they don't know anything about it. Even when we just pronounce the word Kundalini, we do so in a state of reverence because it is so powerful. When you need to activate Kundalini, the necessary preparation should be done in your body, mind and emotions because if you pump energy into a system that is not ready for that tension or amount, the fuse will blow. Many people come to me who have lost their mental balance and physical abilities because they tried Kundalini Yoga without proper guidance and assistance. If the necessary, supportive atmosphere is not there, just trying to let the Kundalini rise can be very irresponsible and dangerous.

Kundalini Yoga is the most dangerous form

Kundalini Yoga is essentially the most dangerous form of yoga. I say dangerous because it is also the most effective form. What is most effective is always the most dangerous when it is handled incorrectly. For example there are different ways that electricity can be generated. One of these types is generation in nuclear power plants. It's the most efficient way of producing electricity we've known, but it's also the most dangerous, isn't it? If all goes well, it is the easiest and best way to generate electricity on earth. When something goes wrong, it goes so terribly wrong that the damage cannot be repaired. The same goes for Kundalini Yoga. It is the most effective and also the most dangerous form. Without the necessary preparation, without constant guidance and observation from someone who knows it, one should never try. Only the problem is that books have been written about it and everyone wants to do the highest yoga. Nobody wants to start with ā€œAā€, everyone wants to start the alphabet with ā€œZā€. This attitude in itself is dangerous.

If the necessary supportive atmosphere is not there, just trying to let the Kundalini rise can be very irresponsible and dangerous.

In the classical yogic traditions there is a certain type of yoga that we teach to people who live in families. There is a certain other type of yoga that we teach ascetics. We never teach the ascetic form to those who live in the family. It is the most effective form, but it requires a certain level of discipline and focus that your normal life does not allow. If you practice this type of yoga, it will destroy your outer life instantly.

This does not mean that there is something wrong with Kundalini Yoga. It's a fantastic process, but you have to get it right because energy is not inherently different. You can shape your life with it or destroy your life with it. Electricity shapes our lives. But you know what happens when you stick your little finger in! Energy has no judgment. It's the way you use it. Kundalini is like that too. Right now you are using them, but in a minimal way. When you maximize it, you can overcome the limitations of your existence.

Kundalini Yoga: the science of dissolving limitations

That is the goal of all forms of yoga, but Kundalini Yoga is particularly strongly oriented towards it. In fact, all life strives for it. In one way or another, everyone wants to experience life more intensely than it is at the moment. One wants to sing, another wants to dance, another wants to drink alcohol, another wants to pray - why are they doing all this? You want to experience life more intensely. Everyone wants to make their Kundalini rise, but they leave everything to chance. If you approach it scientifically with a correct method, we call it yoga.

Publisher's Note: Excerpt from a lecture by Sadhguru as part of the 21-week training to become a Hatha Yoga teacher. The Isha Yoga School's course program offers the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the yogic system and the ability to teach Hatha Yoga. Part of this is Angamardana, an ancient yogic process for absolute fitness. It uses the body's momentum to train all muscle groups and provides the system with new energy in just 30 minutes.
