History of essential oils
Essential oils have been used for a variety of purposes for a very long time. Unfortunately, it is not possible to trace back the exact time when they were first used. What is certain is that essential oils have been used for medicinal purposes in Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years.
The Egyptians were already familiar with the technique of distillation, the ancient Greeks used oils for medicinal purposes and the Romans loved fragrances and the rich use of perfumes. They also knew about the antiseptic effects of certain plants.
The use of essential oils stretched through the next centuries, during which the process of distillation was perfected, until pharmacists began to sell more essential oils in the 17th century. Since then, many secrets have been revealed about the extraction and components of essential oils.
To date, its importance in alternative medicine has not decreased. Essential oils are also used in the manufacture of solvents and perfumes.
Extraction and processing of essential oils
There are three ways to obtain essential oil. The most common type is steam distillation, in which the water vapor drives the oil out of the plant, then condenses and then separates it from the water.
The so-called cold pressing is only used for citrus oils, while extraction is mostly used for flower oils, in which the soluble aromas and colorings are removed from the flowers using a solvent.
The very elaborate and costly effleurage, as it is known from the novel "Perfume", is hardly used any more.
The further processing depends entirely on the effect that the essential oil is supposed to have. Mostly it remains unchanged, but it can also be concentrated or unwanted components can be removed. Unfortunately, the production of purely natural oils has decreased significantly, as synthetic processes are more cost-effective and more productive.
Use and application of essential oils
Humans can make use of the defense mechanisms of plants, because the antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal substances that are obtained from the plant extract work just as efficiently for us humans as they do with the plant from which the essential oils are extracted. It is well known that frankincense has an antibacterial effect and the smoke has been used in natural medicine for many centuries.
Tea tree and thyme have an antifungal effect, whereby tea tree oil is nature's universal genius.
Very often the essential oils of conifers are used to clear the airways. Peppermint is also one of the plants whose ingredients, when inhaled, have an expectorant and cough-relieving effect.
Aromas are used in scented candles and massage oils and are used for a wide variety of therapeutic purposes. The calming effect of lavender or the stimulating effect of rosemary are known, which is widely recognized. The aphrodisiac properties of sandalwood, for example, are highly questioned.
Not least in aromatherapy, essential oils are used, even if the effect of this therapy has not been scientifically confirmed. Mood disorders - mostly of an emotional nature - can be successfully combated in this way.
What do you have to pay attention to?
When buying, make sure the essential oil is 100% pure. This means that it is really only obtained from natural plants and not synthetically produced. Furthermore, an oil should never be used neat. Dosage instructions can be found on the package insert for various areas of application. It makes a difference whether you treat a light burn with lavender oil on your skin or use lavender oil as an aphid additive.
Essential Oil Tests & Other Reviews
New: our editorially supported list of further reports. The internet is full of essential oil tests that compare technical data, but rarely really test the products (we therefore clearly refer to our overview as a "comparison" and by no means a "test"). So we have made it our business to distinguish supposed tests from honest test reports and to list the most helpful tests, reports, discussions and useful information about aromatic oils for you here:
